When I think of winter I think of Muskoka. Why? They always have an abundant amount of snow being dumped onto them. The region doesn’t close, they battle the elements and make it work. It’s uncommon for me to see a snowmobile drive up and down the street where I live but, up North; totally normal. It’s also odd to me to see pet owners on skis or snowshoes to walk their pets but, again it’s completely normal up there. With each season, I make myself a list and promise to achieve as much on that list as possible before the season ends. When I wanted to try snowshoeing for the very first time, it was a no-brainer to head to the Muskoka area.
When I first laid eyes on Mike and Chris’s property, I was awe-struck. The uniqueness of their property made me gitty and stirred up the inner child in me. A feeling I tend to chase often and mostly find outdoors. Once, I reached out to them and started communicating with them about my plans, they were more helpful. I never did get to meet my hosts but, would give them a great big hug if our paths ever crossed.
On Monday morning, before heading out I received an email. An email saying to be careful on the roads because they were treacherous with the snowfall and whiteouts. I am what you call, stubborn. I don’t like when the weather tries to stop me and my plans. But the fact my hosts reached out to me and offered a reschedule date was so heartwarming and kind. Good people still exist. Slow and steadily I made my way to Gravenhurst. It took me a little extra time because I needed to arrive alive! *haha* Once, I arrived…I didn’t touch my car. There was so much to do and see that I didn’t need to hop in my car to wander.
After entering the cozy space, I immediately went to the left towards the kitchen. It had everything one would need while, away from home. I started roaming the cabin to find out it was larger than I expected. Three bedrooms, if you include the A-Frame year-round Bunkie outside the cabin, laundry room, living space complete with Netflix and high-speed Wi-Fi, one bathroom, wood-burning stove and a beautiful cedar barrel sauna.
The A-frame Bunkie was one of my favourite features. It’s about 60 feet from the cabin and has heat for those colder months. It includes a queen bed, deck, 16’ ceilings, lots of light and completely private.
The property itself is well treed and backs onto Crown land forest and wetlands, only a 5-minute walk to Kahshe Lake. In the summer, the hosts provide a canoe and kayaks. Of course, you would have the option to bring your own boat as well. In the winter, hosts will provide guests with two snowshoe rentals free of charge. I tried snowshoeing here for the first time and I was so excited to do so. I would recommend it to a friend *winks*
Now, this was a solo trip for me but, this would be a perfect romantic getaway, or one could bring the family out for a vacation away from the city. No greater place to spend some quality time than the outdoors. Here you’d be surrounded by trees and wildlife away from that noisy city. I also did notice the hosts had board games and various outlets for TV entertainment just in case it rained. I chose to spend my time outdoors either on foot exploring or in the sauna relaxing. All in all, an AMAZING time spent in Muskoka and I would come back but, don’t take my word for it. Go experience it yourself; until next time happy wandering!
