When I was little, my parents would load up the car and take us to the captivating Niagara Falls. Even as a little girl, I can recall the ”Pirate Shipwreck” on the highway along the way to our destination. Once we passed the marker, we knew it wasn’t much longer before we reached the falls.
About ‘La Grande Hermine’ (The Big Weasel)
Before I go into why this landmark is circulating on our media outlets, let us educate ourselves on its origin. La Grande Hermine was build-in 1914; it served as a ferry, cargo ship, haunted house for events, and a restaurant in the Quebec region.
Why is it here?
Since the multi-purposed vessel was so diverse, the owners wanted to relocate the structure. Unfortunately, with its move, the watercraft became lodged in the Jordan Harbour and has been there since 1997. It became a victim of arson in 2003, which created its rusty, ‘pirate shipwreck’ image.
What now?
Currently, there is a public document on the federal government’s buy and sell website taking bids to remove three decaying boat posts. The worry is that the masts will fall over and hurt an innocent bystander after a March inspection by the Coast Guard.
When should you visit?
Knowing the above information, use your discretion with your explorations. Despite the newfound knowledge, I still wanted to check out the shipwreck before its demise. I set out in the evening just before the sun was setting and I would actually recommend for one to check out this spot early morning. Additionally, if you could pull yourself out of bed this would be an amazing sunrise location with a free parking lot close to the attraction.
