Cherry blossoms are in full bloom and that means Spring is upon us. I can’t tell you how excited I am for warmer temperatures. In Japan, the Sakura Cherry Blossom symbolizes new life and a sign of Spring. Which, is probably why a lot of us are chasing these beauties.
I keep hearing about cherry blossoms on the radio and in conversations with friends. So, I thought I should share some of my favourite spots in and around Toronto, Ontario for blossoms.
High Park
High Park is located in the heart of Toronto and the most popular for cherry blossom sightings. Every year this park gets brought up and is always of the crowds it brings. Also, how traffic and parking can be a nightmare. The solution to that would be taking the train into the city. If you do decide to take the less stressful transportation, the crowds will then, discourage you or ruin the experience (or so they tell me). I realize that’s a bit harsh to say but, it’s all over social media, radio and conversations through friends. Until this year, I avoided the park like the plague because I don’t enjoy crowds and I know the traffic would ruin the experience entirely for me.
I was lucky enough to have some time in the morning during the week. Going to High Park it is suggested to go on off-hours. Through conversations and forums, I’ve read that after 10 am it gets busy. Luckily, the parking lot wasn’t full but, people were starting to show up. Spending about 3 hours roaming the large park searching for them was pretty fun. I met a lot of dogs because I went through the off-leash dog park. Highly recommend, those animals will put a smile on anyone’s face. SO FUN!
Where can I find them?
I noticed there were three different sections of cherry blossoms. The first section was around a baseball diamond. Honestly, I don’t particularly like it when the trees are in a row, but enjoy them in clusters. Another section of blossoms was just around the parking lot. Lastly, the larger more aesthetically pleasing section of blossoms was closer to Grenadier Pond. Here you will find photographers doing photoshoots, families, friends and all in awe. Seriously, a beautiful spot!
Trinity Bellwoods Park
Trinity Bellwoods Park is located in the west end of Toronto and about a 15-minute drive from High Park. Although you will need to find street parking or a nearby parking lot. This park is a great place to run through, walk a dog or take a casual stroll. The CN Tower peaks through the park making it a little unique. As far as the cherry blossoms go, unfortunately, I wasn’t impressed by them because I found them to be bare. However, I did go a couple of days after peak blooms and maybe, that is why. Moreover, add this location to a day trip already planned but, do not go into the city for it.
Spencer Smith Park
Spencer Smith Park is in the heart of Burlington and is located on the shore of Lake Ontario. Without a doubt, this park has a bit of everything including walking and bike trails, beach area for the kids, ice cream shops nearby as well as cute, dining spots. Sometimes, I come here to watch the sunrise. Importantly, this park hosts many festivals such as Sound of Music, Ribfest and of course, the Sakura Festival. Two rows of Sakura Cherry Blossom trees can be found on Lakeshore Road just before Brant Street, near the gazebo and pier. A great spot to have a quick photoshoot or to enjoy the blooms. Additionally, I think this could be a great place to bring a date or the family. You can make a whole day plan by going to Spencer’s Smith Park.
Bayfront Park
Bayfront Park is found in the West-end of Hamilton Harbour near Bay Street North in Hamilton. Free parking on site. Great for dog walkers, cyclists and nature enthusiasts. Previously, I’ve mentioned this park because of the incredible sunsets here. Now, I’m suggesting you go back to see the two rows of blossoms. One morning, before lunchtime I wandered the area and noticed the birds these trees attract. The oriole bird displays a brilliant orange colour contrasted with a blackhead, wings and tail. I found it pretty neat to watch them fly from tree to tree and chirp happily.
Airbnb Suggestion: Read about The Bayfront Apartment located across this park.
Joyce Archdekin Park
Honestly, this is one of those hidden gems. Located in Brampton and just before downtown. You can park across the park at the Metro and Shoppers Drugmart parking lot. Use the crosswalk to cross over to paradise! Here you will find clusters of sakura cherry blossoms. I’ve seen maternity and engagement photoshoots done here. Seriously, this park is my favourite out of all the ones I’ve mentioned. Why? Because it is easy to get to free parking, hardly any traffic and there are plenty of trees in the area.
Bonus
Of course, there are many cherry blossom spots but, these are worth a mention. For instance, Centennial Park in Etobicoke has cherry blossoms and a wicked conservatory. (Click here for conservatory) Driving past the blossoms I noticed they were all in a row extremely close to the road. Not, the most secluded of spots, however, the conservatory is worth the visit.
